Our Poultry Flock
Our chickens (both layers and broilers), turkeys, ducks, and geese are all raised naturally. They're pasture-raised and raised on naturally grown grains from our own farm including wheat, peas and flax. During the spring and summer, they graze around the farmyard and also enjoy extra vegetables and fruit from the garden.
Our hens are let out of their pens every morning to forage wherever they please on our farm. They enjoy scratching in the dirt, chasing grasshoppers, and eating the grass and weeds that grow around the farmyard. In the winter, the hens spend most of their time in their warm insulated buildings where they are happy to move around freely inside, but they still enjoy going outside in the snow if it's not too cold. Since there's no fresh grass in the winter, the chickens are given as much of our own alfalfa hay as they can eat. The alfalfa is very rich in protein, calcium, and other minerals. They receive no antibiotics.
We raise a variety of different breeds including Lavender Orpingtons, Ameraucanas, Silver-laced Wyandottes, Black Copper Maran, and Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, and Khaki layers. The dual-purpose and heritage breeds tend to be heavier birds and so are very well suited to our cooler climate which means they lay very well through the winter months.
Several years ago we added four Toulouse geese, six Pekin Ducks, and six Rouen Ducks. Until then, it had been many years since we'd had waterfowl on our farm. The goose flock has grown a great deal, and also serve as helpful watchdogs on our farm!
The ducks and geese have great personalities and are a terrific addition to our flock. The ducks and geese are pasture raised but also enjoy our home-grown grain mixture which we grind ourselves. If you're interested in ducks or geese, or Toulouse goslings, please contact us as soon as possible, since quantities are limited.
Our poultry are never fed soy and only given corn silage as a boredom buster in the winter (corn silage includes stalks, leaves and whole kernels and is a small part of their diet).
